[SOLVED] Google Pac Man Keeps Going And Going And Going

Just did a search on Google.

Noticed the 30th anniversary of Pacman tribute with an interactive game on top. Played with it for a while. Had to get back to work. Needed to restart Firefox (Adobe update, separate story!) Gotten Firefox back up... and the sound of Pacman keeps coming up! There is no window open in Firefox with google.com page on it..... yet, the pacman sound keeps going and going and going.. Drives me crazy. Anyone got a solution? Restarting Firefox did not help. Thanks!

Google should be a serious website. It's a nuisance to keep hearing the sound repeating when you are reading the news, etc., I have deleted Google and change to Yahoo.com Not a bad idea to change new search engine.

This is very odd. I have the same problem It's as if this is been permanently installed on firefox. I've tried disabling javascript. But I need to to do my development work. So when I re-enable it and restart firefox, there's that sound. Rebooting doesn't help. Not everyone seems to be affected in the same way. And though people are complaining on google's site, I don't think they are in a hurry to get out in front of this.

WTF - make it stop. Everyone thinks I'm playing a prank. Happens in any browser.

Same here, but found a fix somewhere else... just disable the CoolPreviews add-on and then restart Firefox.

Certainly happens in google chrome!

It's absolutely horrible. I have liked google for ages but this is a disaster. Entire office been told to change browser to BING to stop the noise.

The siren just goes on and on and on and on and on.

Hopeless. Worst mistake my google certainly in my memory of the company ..

Thank you Anonymous 11:11. This worked for me. Just go to Tools/Add-Ons and disable CoolPreviews.

The Cool previews has the update for their plugin, so you can update it later........

AFTER YOU STOP THE NOISE! ;)

Hi,

Try my custom solution for all browsers (change Google address on your homepage) - look on my two posts by PRO (May 21,2010 9:37 PM and May 22, 2010 8:21 AM) here: http://www.ghacks.net/2010/05/21/google-pacman-sound-bug/

Solved - the best SECURE solution with Proxify, Xerosurf, Yauba, maybe google custom (which is NOT secure) also. Siren to hell.

Here is the explanation I found by Cool Previews themselves for what was happening... You just can not rely on other people's webpages anymore, even if it is Google!

"""Coolpreviews Team
May 21st, 2010 at 8:15 pm #
We’ve officially released Coolpreviews v.3.1.0521 to Mozilla. This fixes the Pac Man bug.
It may take a couple of hours for the Mozilla servers to display the new version on the Mozilla addon page. You can also grab the fix at http://www.coolpreviews.com.
So What Happened?
The bug came about through today’s Google’s homepage, which automatically starts a Pac Man game after 5 seconds. We had an old line of code from an experimental build that would load up the Google homepage in the background. We have now removed that code. Previously, Google did not have any music on their page. So, obviously, today’s debut Google’s mighty ghosts of Pac-Man really gobbled us up!
Again, we apologize for the craziest bug we’ve ever experienced! Super thanks to all our users for hanging in there!"""

My facebook page and my yahoo email were hijacked the day before and I thought everything had been fixed and "resecured" for what that means. Then this siren came on and scared the p out of me. Not fun. By the timing, I was severely traumatized by it. I'm glad some people have a sense of humor about it. I hope it's fixed. I love coolpreviews the most and hated giving it up.

I was looking at the source code to see how Google rendered their little Pac-Man game. It's not something I recognize. Anyone know what's running it?

Well, it looks like we have successfully weathered this episode.

If anyone wants to play the google pacman again, here is the permanent link. Don't worry, you should be able to silence the game easily now ;)

I was using chrome on a FORD.Com web site when it crashed. Now everytime I start up my computer I get this siren for about 20 seconds and then it stops. I deleted chrome and nothing helps. Any advice ?

That is interesting, Jimmy B. Very similar situation as the Google PacMan Sound. My guess is you have downloaded some software that gets automatically started. You could try downloading freefixer.com, run it on your computer and see if it reports any recent files. Or you could search your disks for any new files since you first saw a problem.

Of course, to go one step further in the direction you took, you could backup your data and reinstall your OS as a sure way to get rid of the annoyance.
